How many keywords per page of content is best practice? There isn’t just one answer to that question because there are numerous variables to consider before developing your content strategy. However, there is a wrong way to do SEO, which will surely get you nowhere in Google’s search results.
Beware of SEO Agencies Who Sell You on “Keyword Pages”
While every SEO plan requires a keyword strategy, that doesn’t mean writing a page of content for every possible keyword, synonym, plural variation, etc is a good approach. In fact, you will fail if you take that approach.
No one wants to waste their time, only to be left with low quality content written by underpaid writers. I say “underpaid” because many skilled writers are underpaid, but write anyway because it is what they love to do. Even then, they aren’t going to do the level of research you need unless they share the same passion for your industry that you do.
“Keyword Pages” Are Not a Thing
Search Engines are meant to help users connect to information that they need. Today’s users expect, fast, quality results that will lead them to an answer or something engaging.
Here is how you know if you are being scammed by an SEO agency selling you “Keyword Pages.”
- They will typically sell you SEO packages based on a price/single page business model.
- They will tell you that you need to write a page of content for every keyword, even the plural variations of a term.
- Your content will feel very redundant when you read it.
- The agency has not conducted any type of research on your audience personas or any type of discovery.
- The pages tend to appear more like low quality landing pages with thin content. Their explanation to you for these pages will be “To Capture Long Tail Keywords.”
Please do not fall for these lies. I’ve seen too many businesses fall for this trap, while wasting tens of thousands of dollars.
A true SEO Strategist will do more planning in the beginning. Here are some rules of thumb when you begin searching for the right SEO Company.
- They will ask to meet with you and conduct a discovery. The purpose of this meeting is to understand your audience, industry, influencers and brand.
- When conducting keyword research, their focus will be more on segmenting keywords by audience personas rather than web pages. There is a an intent for every keyword search, which means there is usually a specific type of audience conducting it.
- Their focus will be on creating useful content resources that connect with your customers or industry influencers. In some cases, this will be long form content with everything you need to know (e.g. The Ultimate Guide to….), while in other circumstances, a video or infographic may benefit you more.
- Keyword Density will be the last thing you hear come out of their mouth. While it may be a fancy word, that’s the only reason someone would use it in a sentence today. SEO is way beyond keyword density and should be stored in SEO archives.
- You will be provided with a measurable, time specific goal for your rankings in Google. The number of keywords will not be important. Understanding the goal for your business and reaching the goal is what matters.
- Your conversations will be more about your business and your audience rather than listening to a bunch of hype about title tags and meta data every 5 minutes.
Unfortunately, there are many small businesses who don’t have the time to keep up with SEO trends as they rapidly change year after year. The hiring process for an SEO agency one year will probably look much different in the following year.
